Smetana's Creative Litomyšl: Pilgrims

Bohemian Heritage Fund is holding two exhibitions at the Smetana’s Creative Litomyšl in 2018. The exhibition called Pilgrims by curator David Železný maps out uneasy fates of Czech painters who were involuntarily driven out into exile.

With the motive of a pilgrimage, the exhibition is thematically linked to the musical part of the festival which premiered the cantata Czech Pilgrim. However, painters-pilgrims went onto their pilgrimages oftentimes involuntarily. “Two totalitarian regimes, Nazi and communist, that affected our country immediately one after the other, spread our artists to places to which they probably wouldn’t have ever set out otherwise. Some of these journeys already make up legendary stories. For example the journey full of hardships that Adolf Hoffmeister, Max Kopf, Alén Diviš and Antonín Pelc  embarked on from the cruel Paris prison La Santé to the south of France and further on the steamboat Capitaine Paul Lemerle to Morocco and Martinique (three hundreds of other European intellectuals travelled along with them, André Breton and Wilfredo Lam were among them). Not much is known about other escapes in general. Painter Georges Kars did not move from Lyon to Geneva without difficulty in 1941. He arrived to the refugee camp without a shoe which he’d lost while crossing a wild river with the son of the sculptor Chana Orloff upon his shoulders,” says curator David Železný.

The opening took place on 14 June in the Castle Brewery in Litomyšl, the exhibition runs until 7 July.
